New Type is an offshoot of the cosplay Izakaya Little BSD, except instead of girls dressed in fluffy fetish dresses you get otoko no ko—boys dressed as girls who may or may not like boys who do girls (dressed as boys). Sadly, our walk on the wild side proved much blander than expected.

We were ready to go face first and dive balls deep into an exciting new sub culture, but the experience didn't provide anything meaty enough to latch onto. The décor and menu failed to capitalize on the unique premise of the bar, and the girls weren’t half the entertainers that their big sisters upstairs at BSD are. The result is a run-of-the-mill watering hole that just happens to employ cross dressers, which, while fun for a nightcap, isn’t worth making an evening out of.
